A Young Lion

One of the largest Jellyfish to be found in the world’s oceans, the Lions Mane Jellyfish Cyanea capillata. Not a common site on Ningaloo Reef, and even less common in Exmouth Gulf, but when conditions are just right they bloom in the deep offshore waters of Exmouth Canyon. From there, an eddy of Leeuwin Current water occasionally may peel off and bring them closer to shore and even, on rare occasions, into Exmouth Gulf. On this day deep blue oceanic water has been pushed into the normally turbid gulf, bringing with it a diversity of oceanic creatures including this juvenile Lions Mane Jelly.
