Ningaloo Convicts

A school of Convict Surgeonfish Acanthurus triostegus light up the reef as they feed through the coral. These herbivores have a crucial role to play on the reef. As they feed on turfing algae that grows on the bare rocks and corals, they are creating clean surfaces that are just what the baby coral polpys will need to find to grow their new coral collonies when the corals spawn in autumn. Taken on Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
