The Nursery

An intricately connected system is Exmouth Gulf. While her calf suckles milk mother Dugong crunches away on seagrass, inadvertently disturbing tiny invertebrates living amongst their roots. One day this juvenile Golden Trevally (you can just see his back if you look carefully) will grow to be a formidable predator, but for now it makes the most of this unique opportunity to feed. These animals will all in turn re-fertilize the seagrass via their feces, encouraging new growth in an interconnected ecosystem. Normally shy animals, this was the first time I have witnessed both mother and calf happy to feed undisturbed while I lay in the seagrass taking this image. This photo was shortlisted in the 2023 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year competition.
